Carbon Footprint - The Essentials

Carbon footprint: A representation of the effect human activities have on the climate in terms of the total amount of greenhouse gases produced (measured in units of carbon dioxide).

A carbon footprint is often expressed as tons of carbon dioxide or tons of carbon emitted, usually on a yearly basis. You can access a government model footprint calculator in the right column or by clicking here.

Carbon footprint is directly related to the amount of natural resources consumed, increasingly used or referred to as a measure of environmental impact. Carbon dioxide is recognised as a greenhouse gas (GHG), of which increasing levels in the atmosphere are linked to global warming and climate change.

Videoconferencing is largely accredited as being a major aid in the fight against Global Warming, with businesses and organisations now implementing videoconferencing solutions as a real alternative to business travel.

The Stats

*If 15% of meetings were replaced by videoconferences travel budgets can be cut by 11%.
*If 20% of business travel was replaced by videoconferencing in the EU, 22.3 million tonnes of CO2 would be eliminated annually.
*If just half of the workers in the EU chose videoconferencing instead of travelling for 1 meeting a year we could save 2.2 million tonnes of CO2.
*Around 75% of the UK’s CO2 emissions are attributed to business practices, a third of which is directly linked to travel.
*In a 2006 survey it was found that 47% of regular business travels suffered from sleep deprivation, 25% suffered with increased stress and 23% had problems with loneliness. So it's not just the environment that travel has an impact on!
