The Desktop Revolution: Is it here?!
Desktop video communications has long been the holy grail of the videoconferencing industry. The manufacturers have released product after product to ignite the desktop revolution, but have never managed to venture much further than the top-level executive desktop space, largely owing to cost and a lack of services to the desktop.
This is not to say that products released in the past have been poor products, far from it, the TANDBERG 1000 and 150 were both groundbreaking in their own right, the Polycom HDX4000 was an excellent move into HD on the desktop, whilst the Sony TL-30 and TL40 were both incredibly stylish and efficient systems when they were released.
Another area the manufacturers have investigated is the use of software based video products such as the Polycom PVX, TANDBERG Movi and Microsoft Office Communicator. These products bring more flexibility to where the systems can be used, and are helping existing video users to expand their solution for a much smaller cost.
But finally, importantly, and not a second too late, TANDBERG has released a SIP protocol video endpoint which can be implemented into a standard IP Telephony environment, whilst commanding a fee similar to that of a Cisco IP Phone, the TANDBERG E20.
The E20 has defied all of the previous objectors to desktop deployment, cost, ability to provide service, feasibility for the standard size desktop and ease of use. The system is no more complex than a mobile phone. It is a simplistic and universal solution.
Not only does it interconnect with IP Phones, it can also interconnect to other video systems, be they room, software or desktop, Polycom, Tandberg or Sony.
This is one of the first desktop products for a long time to get the team at Direct Visual genuinely excited. The potential of this product is incredible; it could open up the industry to really begin the boom we have expected for a number of years.
Experts have been predicting it, and now the insiders are expecting it; the revolution could well have started.
Obviously the addition of video to the desktop will bring with it the necessity for services and support for the desktop user, but these will be no more complex or time consuming than the services already provided for telephony users.
For video to the desktop to take off it is essential for the user to create a positive mindset and an infrastructure for support and services to ensure that all users have peace of mind that things will work.
As a complete solutions provider Direct Visual has always ensured that we provide the support needed to ensure that projects are a success. So, are always on hand to help these projects during their early development.
The Desktop revolution is a stage of the industries development which should see it become mainstream technology, and the final step before video communications become and everyday part of life. With use within the home the next step.
For a number of years videoconferencing has appeared in Science Fiction films and TV shows including Star Trek, Back to the Future and Fifth Element, now it’s possible for it to appear in Eastenders. It’s no longer Science Fiction and is now Science Fact.
Video communications is a wonderful supplement to more traditional communications methods, and everyday use through the implementation of desktop products in the working environment should herald the start of the future of the technology.
With the E20 you can really get in on the fuss, and help this revolution take place.
